ANNE HOLTON FOR RICHMOND SCHOOL BOARD

Strong schools, strong teachers, and real opportunity for every Richmond student

School Board member • Former Virginia Secretary of Education • RPS graduate • RPS parent

ABOUT ANNE HOLTON

Anne Holton is a proud product of Richmond Public Schools and a grateful parent of three RPS graduates.

She has loved RPS since her time as a student at MLK Middle School (then Mosby). She attended during the first year of court-ordered desegregation, when her father, Linwood Holton, was Governor of Virginia in the 1970s. Together, she and her classmates learned from extraordinary teachers, and from each other — from their differences, from what they had in common, and from their shared experience of advancing civil rights for all.

She came away from that time with a lifelong love for Richmond Public Schools and a passion for public service.

Anne has spent her career serving Richmond children and families. She started her career as a legal aid lawyer and served as a Juvenile and Domestic Relations judge. She worked in education policy as Virginia’s Secretary of Education, served on the Virginia Board of Education, and taught as a professor at George Mason University.

She now represents the Sixth District, including her alma mater MLK Middle, on the Richmond School Board, where she is focused on ensuring every RPS student gets a strong start and a real opportunity to succeed.

Anne and her husband Tim Kaine have three adult children who got strong starts in life through RPS.

Anne has a plan to ensure our schools and students thrive, because strong public schools benefit every Richmonder.

ANNE’S PRIORITIES

She has seen what happens when schools are well-supported, and when they are not. Strong schools mean children can find stability, support, and opportunity; when schools are under-resourced, children can fall through the cracks.

Loving public schools means taking responsibility for them: investing in them, supporting teachers, and making sure every child has access to a great education.

Anne’s priorities focus on the fundamentals that set students up for long-term success:

  • Helping all students read fluently and joyfully by third grade

  • Ensuring mastery of key math skills in elementary school, which are the building blocks for secondary STEM courses.

  • Redesigning high school to enhance passion for learning and career exploration, as outlined in RPS’s Dreams4RPS strategic plan.

  • Attracting and retaining great teachers for every RPS classroom and strong PTA’s for every school,.

  • Supporting the needed investments to make all these goals a reality.

RPS is on the rise, and Anne is committed to making sure every student, in every neighborhood, benefits.

ABOUT THE 6TH DISTRICT

Richmond’s 6th Voter District is the Gateway District, spanning from Highland Park in the north, through downtown, and along the I-95 corridor.

It encompasses strong neighborhoods with deep community roots as well as areas attracting newer residents.  It is home to four RPS Schools: Overby-Sheppard Elementary, Martin Luther King Middle, Martin Luther King Pre-School, and Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary. Students in the Sixth District also attend numerous other schools throughout the city.
